Refurbished laptop: Bargain or trap?

· Buying Advice

Navy Andy Computers graphic headed "Refurbished laptop: bargain or trap?", with a laptop showing a yellow tick and four checks: comes with Windows 11, has an SSD not a hard drive, battery condition is stated, and a proper warranty.

A refurbished laptop can be a proper bargain, or a tired old machine that's been given a quick wipe and a polish.

With Black Friday adverts on the way, you'll see plenty of both. Good refurbished laptops are often ex-business machines, built tougher than many budget home models, checked over and sold for well under the price of new. For homework, emails and the family admin, they can be a smart choice.

The trap is the ones that are cheap for a reason, so check four things before you buy. It should come with Windows 11, not Windows 10, because some older machines can't run it at all. It should have an SSD rather than an old spinning hard drive, or it'll feel slow from day one. The seller should tell you the battery's condition. And it should come with a proper warranty, not "sold as seen".

New is often the better choice if you want something light with a long battery life, or a machine to last you many years.
