Passing on your old laptop?
Your old laptop still knows your passwords. Before you hand it down to a grandchild this term, do four things first.
Start by copying off everything you want to keep, like photos and documents, onto a USB stick or external drive. Open a few files afterwards to check they copied properly. Then sign out of your accounts: email, your Microsoft or Apple account, and the web browser, which often has your passwords saved.
Next, wipe it properly. Deleting files and emptying the bin isn't enough, because deleted files can often be recovered. On Windows, use "Reset this PC", choose "Remove everything" and turn on the option to clean the drive. On a newer Mac, use "Erase All Content and Settings". Older Macs take a few more steps. Finally, check the laptop still gets security updates. If it doesn't, it isn't a safe machine for a youngster to use online. If it runs Windows 10, it needs signing up to Microsoft's free extended updates, and I can check that for you.
If you'd rather not do it yourself, bring it into the workshop in Lostwithiel. I'll copy off your files, wipe it and have it ready for its new owner.
